举一反三(jǔ yī fǎn sān):translated as “one instance reflects to 3 more inferences”, namely learn by analogy; originally from <The Analects>.

*** Active learning: the power of analogy. ***

How to learn in an active way?

Step 1: Ask WHY!

Why?

It brings out more critical thinking, inspires deeper insights on the topic, broadens understanding. It creates opportunity to understand something from the core, the essence.

Step 2: Ask HOW!

Ask how to do it and think about it then take action. Confidence comes from practice. Keep asking WHY and HOW during the process of deliberate practice, you learn from success, but even more from failures. The key is asking why, think about how, then put into action!

Step 3: find connection between WHY and HOW.

The mastery of WHY and experience from HOW bring out flexibility and freedom of thinking about everything in a connected way, namely holistically.
